MASH by Robert Altman. Hotline

Credits and synopsis. Home playbill.

"The kind of humor and jokes in MASH were rude, was loaded with sexist and scatological jokes, humor was a very bad taste. But our attitude was that there was nothing obscene and scatological that the destruction of these young people. What was the cure them when they would be sent to die in other wars? "
Robert Altman.

" This is not a hospital, is a madhouse! ".

A s with other movies our cycle "The Satire at War " , MASH (1970) , is the product of the time he lived and nonconformity that American society was in the late 60's and early 70's by the prevailing situation of foreign policy U.S. The years of production and release of the film is framed in full turmoil of the Vietnam War, a conflict that was attended by U.S. since 1964, official date, although his interest in the area did not decline after World War II possible spread of communism in the area and economic interests of the conflict until his retirement in 1973 due to strong social pressure of their citizens and the impossibility of beating the enemy on their own ground.

student and countercultural movements, supported both by intellectuals and by the civilian population, the coverage of media updated daily continuous defeats suffered by his soldiers, political groups began to stand against the war, made a great anti-war spirit took hold of American society and encourage the streets to demonstrate their disagreement in mass demonstrations. The antiwar movement reached its peak between 1969 and 1970. Then polls reflect that most of the population opposed U.S. participation in the conflict. On October 15, 1969 was a demonstration in Washington attended by more than half a million people, about two million around the country, demanding an end to his country's participation in the war. This event was broadcast worldwide and took root in the more conservative American feelings. This discomfort was also impregnated and widely followed by musicians such as Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, undisputed masters of American popular music, who sang from the rooftops their protests. The pacifist feeling left its mark on massive festivals such as Woodstock recalled in August 1969 and released by the Film and Television (1). At that time Robert Altman photographed these moments for the culture and against the established power to collect their work in the book "The Sixties: Photographs by Robert Altman."

From this period comes the success of MASH , a survivor of fear film industry and turned into a Hollywood icon a time thanks to the perseverance and ingenuity of the unknown, at that time, Robert Altman. A director who, in Alvor the 70's, was able to imbue his work of courage disapproving of the time and knew how to channel it to produce the work at hand.

Draft MASH, which stands for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital - Mobile Surgical Army Hospital, was born with the purchase of the rights to the novel Mash: a novel about 3 doctors in the military military surgeon Richard Hooker by part of the 20 Century Fox, for the project were hired Robert Altman after many directors have withheld. In its shares have contained only as a director on television series like Alfred Hitchcock Presents or Bonanza and film credits as little highlighted as unknown to the general public. In MASH are outlined each and every one of its guidelines, using experimental means that later would become its own stamp.

uptake levels from a distance using the camera zoom not to interfere with the performance of the actors. The use of plans that contribute to visual anarchy due to the large group of people who appear in them. This is accompanied by visual chaos of overlapping dialogue, thus providing naturally to the talks and integrate the viewer in situations consistent with life itself. Also in MASH begins his taste for the parallel histories and participation in them of an ensemble cast. In Nashville (1975), A wedding day (1978), The Player (1991), Cuts (1993), Gosford Park (2001), among others, satirical slip critical to the cinema, dance, music and fashion.

Working with actors was complete freedom of interpretation to them, instigating continuously improvise and ignore the script. This very scared the emerging stars Donald Sutherland (Hawkeye), Elliott Gould (Trapper) and Tom Skerritt at the beginning, even to ask for dismissal of Altman. The rest of the cast formed mostly actors film debut and later accompanied the director on his films.

Robert Altman, aware of the difficulties they encounter the study, decided not to call attention to their work. Shielded by the shooting of two heavyweights that were rolling at the same time, Patton Franklin J. Schaffner and Tora!, Tora!, Tora! Richard Fleischer, the Fox, took certain steps to make their way running as experimental not attract attention of managers. Consciously opted for hiring unknown actors not to increase spending and also managed to finish the filming ahead of schedule and without using the entire budget to avoid attention.
When the work was presented to Fox everyone was horrified. The executives were frightened by the incoherence of a story that contained episodic scenes, but that did not follow a linear plot, the chaotic sounds and scenes so real operating room (2), and the tone of black humor and bad taste, made stagger the release of the film. The writer was furious to see that almost none of their dialogue had been honored. But above all, the omission of reference to the Korean War could make the public confused by the conflict with Vietnam, something that the director deliberately planned.

was when it fell to Robert Altman defend their film. In assembling the relevant references were added to Korea and scenes from the speakers to give cohesion and serve as transitions between war stories and war stories of the protagonists. For this purpose, messages that were originally broadcast on American public address fields in the Korean War. Passes were made projections for the public to see the movie and liked getting filin true to the feelings of the spectators. These measures were obtained final permission from the Fox and gave the nod to the work.

The result was impressive, raised $ 37 million when it had only cost 3. The success was due to the film nicely captures the sense of malaise of American citizens. He put his finger on the pulse on issues such as war, patriotism and authority.

Mixing horror of war with a thug and uninhibited humor. The characters, using humor as an escape valve, live among trading desks and continuous partying to cope with the frightening world around them. Sex, alcohol, jokes and parties make this particular microcosm in which they live is a place habitable. He who is corseted by morality, ends crazy as in the case of the surgeon played by Robert Duvall.

However, voices of the military and religious rebuked the tape. The first forbade his soldiers to see, because they knew that the film incited disrespect to superiors and rebellion in the camps. The church, on the other hand, was inadequate portrayal of the priest's campaign did, and of course were not welcome the satirical scene that parodies the painting by Leonardo Da Vinci "Last Supper" in which held in tone holiday suicide of a dentist.

deployed is corrosive humor, irreverent, acid ... The background music contributes significantly to the lighthearted tone with songs issued by the camp's loudspeakers. Radio Tokyo lyrics help create the relaxed atmosphere conducive to the party. In contrast, the song Painless Suicide in with the film begins, we revert to the protest songs and melancholy, accompanied by pictures of a medical helicopter filled with wounded. Johnny Mandel musicalized each of the songs, including the main theme, which point the child was 14 years of Robert Altman.
Shortly afterwards
created a television series that lasted 11 seasons and continued with the avatars of the same characters, yes, without being interpreted by the actors themselves, thanks to the film were increased his fame and his career took a upward direction. Only the actor who played Radar consented to continue in the same role.

With MASH was a promising start independent careers of Robert Altman. With it got 5 Oscar nominations, curiously getting better script for Ring Lardner Jr. Writer was complement prostituted by Altman and for which he was faced with the writer. Also won the Palme d'Or at the Festival Cannes and the award for best comedy film Golden Globe 1970. His career has been full of ups and downs, but proudly stated that never in his long career he worked on a project that would attract him. In 2006 he received the honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement and settled the debt that the director was more incisive and critical in the past 40 years.

Jose Martinez Trigueros.

(1) The documentary "Woodstock" director Michael Wadleigh in 1970 won the Oscar for Best Documentary.

(2) hired a consultant physician to instruct the actors in scenes of surgery and was taken into account the color of blood that seemed as real as possible. -----------------------

Send "Suicide is Painless"

Translation:
Through the morning fog I see visions of things
. Suffering
hidden from me.
I realize, and I can see ...
... that suicide is painless.
It involves a series of changes,
and I can take it or leave it if I want.
The Game Life is difficult to play.
I lose anyway.
The losing card discover someday.
So this is all I have to say.
Suicide is painless.
It involves a series of changes,
and I can take it or leave it if I want.
The only way to win is by cheating.
and surrender before being beaten, leaving other
my place.
That will be the only painless feat.
Suicide is painless.
It involves a series of changes,
and I can take it or leave it if I want.
The sword of time penetrate our skin.
does not hurt when it begins, but as
its way inside, the pain becomes
more ...
look at him smile. But ...
Suicide is painless.
It involves a series of changes,
and I can take it or leave it if I want.
A brave man once called me
to answer questions that were vital:
"Is it be? Or is it not?"
and replied: "Oh, why do you ask me?"
Suicide is painless.
It involves a series of changes,
and I can take it or leave it if I want.
... and can do the same if you want.

The song was composed by Johnny Mandel, as an instrumental. He later added lyrics by Mike Altman (14 years) to his father, Robert Altman. There are several versions, including highlights of Manic Street Preachers, Marilyn Manson, Bill Evans or Ahmad Jamal.

Bullet.
Robert Altman was a great supporter and consumer of marijuana (he was a member of the board of the National Organization for the Reform of the Laws of mariuana), besides being a heavy drinker until his health suffered. In the cartoon, the character of Elliott Gould writes remedies to cope with life in the camp. At various points in the film We see people smoking joints, drinking martinis and having sexual escapades. A curious anecdote is that Donald Sutherland mistook the smell of marijuana smoke with special effects. --------------------------

, flew to Moscow to Stanley Kubrick

"Great nations have always acted like gangsters, and small as prostitutes.

Stanley Kubrick,
A magazine "Guardian", June 5, 1963
.

M onths before the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which occurred on November 22, 1963, Stanley Kubrick showed in his interview to the British Guardian, skepticism about the political movements that were happening at that moment in history in the world, especially with regard to American and Soviet policy, following the recent "missile crisis in Cuba" at the height of the Cold War born in this crisis the new period of "detente", which "hotline" , really white, red being applied as a reference simply qualitative "Hot Line" (Hot Line) - marked the hotline between the Kremlin and the White House in crisis.

Kubrick, who never seemed surprised by the false move of the great nations in the most critical years common alarm, and notes were left in the shifting political terrain of that year, he was immersed in the production of which would be the best political satire of the Cold War in the history of cinema, and that intelligently parodiaría period " detente "with a cynical political vision of the dreaded irresponsibility in the use of nuclear weapons.

Posters international

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb , with this brilliant and original ironic title, "something ridiculously translated in Spain Hotline. We flew to Moscow, and rather better in Latin America as Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb - Kubrick produced, wrote and directed his new film after the equally controversial Lolita (1962) , premiered last year in Britain's first collaboration with Peter Sellers. It was his third dive in the context of war, from Fear and Desire (1953) and Paths of Glory (Paths of Glory, 1957), although in Red Phone is more suited to a policy context to what happened in the trenches themselves.

However, Red Phone obviously American filmmaker's experience filming scenes of military action and contains some of the most successful and innovative sequences of times, including documentaries about Kubrick's very own, perhaps the best documentary war fiction of history ", with camera in hand and natural lighting. Later in Metal Jacket (Full Metal Jacket, 1987), Kubrick would gala all the technical arsenal inherited from his early films, his photographic expertise and excellent eye for political satire in states war.

Since the late 50's, Stanley Kubrick began to develop the germ idea Red Phone , and finally make the film in 1963. During that time, Kubrick was always concerned about the possibility of a nuclear holocaust, and before finished filming Lolita began developing the idea of \u200b\u200bwhat would be his next film. In that interval, Kubrick, read over 50 novels about nuclear war to be a copy of the novel by Peter George, "Red Alert", which impacts Kubrick, given the striking resemblance to his theories of irresponsibility military in the collection of nuclear weapons after the end of World War II. The initial idea, after finally choosing the novel by Peter George to bring his script, was to devise a dramatic script based on the reality of the historical moment. After paying $ 3,500 for the rights to adapt the novel, writing the script begins with the very literary Peter George, assisted by the economist and professor of foreign affairs, national security and nuclear strategy, Thomas Schelling, future Nobel Laureate in Economics in 2005.

As we know, Kubrick's original intentions were to bring the dramatic tone of the novel by George, seriously, a thriller more tense over the period of the Cold War. However, as Kubrick himself later explained, after the surface of the drama adapted a latent comic tone emerged in many scenes, to imagine the scene of the sequences involved in the relaxation time of writing the script, until finally consider the possibility of turning the whole tone of it to this other script spontaneously, with a strategic political satire shifted to much more flexible with the theme, more risky and yet even more effective. Kubrick explained:
"My idea of \u200b\u200bdoing it as a nightmare comedy came in a few weeks to work on writing the screenplay adaptation. I found that by trying to put more meat on the grill, and imagine the scene completely, I was forced to rule out situations that were absurd or paradoxical, to keep away from sound funny. Yet, these situations seemed to be closer to the heart of the scenes in question. "

For the development of key new comedy screenplay, Kubrick hired Terry Southern novelist, after reading a of his novels, "The Magic Christian." And so, after the new backdrop of sarcastic comedy, it would hide a sophisticated and rigorous structure with good military and scientific base, which over the years has won many laughs as respect for the terrifying closeness with which portrayed the historical context. A reached the point of being studied by scientists based American strategists, they say, in a lot of credibility of the story and saying, some of them, all you need to know about nuclear strategy can be learned from Dr.Strangelove, evidently is a statement loaded with irony, but shows signs of respect earned by the guild. From the Freudian

credits Initial designed by Pablo Ferro, where two aircraft displayed copulating in flight, Red Telephone presents its devastating satire of any military and political element involved in the nuclear conflict in times of détente in the Cold War, with a clear statement of intent Part of Kubrick and his team of writers, so we'll see below can only be a Freudian nightmare key comedy as a metaphor for conflict, however, is terribly possible.

Both the base argument Phone red like "Red Alert", the original novel and as the film parallel based on the same novel, Sydney Lumet, who was shooting with Henry Fonda, Item Limit (Fail Safe, 1964), and finally released later to the case presented by Kubrick and Columbia Pictures, "was so simple and devastating:
A commander of the U.S. Air Force launches a nuclear attack plan, negligent for his government and President, through B-52 bombers that are under its responsibility in the air breaking point with the Soviet Union to Pending the possible order to attack, triggering a chain of events desperate to solve the human error that can mean the apocalypse. However, despite being the U.S. president himself in a direct line through called "red telephone" with the Soviet premier, and get cracking the code to allow the order to stop the irresponsible commander, one of the bombers exceed the limit point the dreaded unloading ammunition, and awakening the Soviet defense complex system of anti-nuclear, which means in just two hours, the end of Humanity.

For Red Phone, Kubrick unleashes its arsenal sarcastic transmuting all kinds of situations and characters involved, emphasizing the over-interpreted the best of the major players, all absolutely superb.

The final argument tells how General of the U.S. Air Force, Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) - pronounced "Jack the Ripper" (Jack the Ripper) - stunned by paranoid ideas about a Communist plot to fluoridate the drinking water, and pollute the "precious bodily fluids" of Americans makes the decision to disobey their obligations in the custody of nuclear weapons within B'52s bombers remain at the point of the boundary with the Soviet Union air. After taking the General Ripper justice into their own hands by ordering a nuclear attack, is accessed and the first level trigger called "device doomsday, apocalyptic the Soviet anti-nuclear defense system, activated automatically after detecting a nuclear attack on the territory of the Soviet Union.

In this scenario, the Air Force base in Burpleson, a helpful British Captain Royal Air Force (RAF) in exchange service, Lionel Mandrake (Peter Sellers), discovers after hearing stories General paranoid that the order given by him was not particularly in retaliation to a Soviet first strike, convincing confidence desperately secret code to neutralize the attack order.

Meanwhile, in the "War Room" Pentagon-stage non-existent in reality, but so compelling in the film caused much controversy, "the General" Buck "Turdigson (George C. Scott) advises the President United States, Merkin Muffley (again, Peter Sellers), - the only serious character throughout the film, "the attack, and apparently, General Ripper had taken advantage of a wild contingency plan in wartime The "Wing Attack Plan R" that gave commanders authority to Earth for a replica to an alleged nuclear Soviet attack on Washington that incapacitate the President to act, signed by President Muffley.

Turdigson try to persuade the President himself to seize the moment to attack en masse to the Soviets, after ordering this force Ripper to reveal the secret code, code that finally discover Captain Mandrake, later, surprisingly after a few sketches of the General Child . Muffley calls the Soviet ambassador in "War Room" of Sadeski Alexei (Peter Bull) to put you in touch with the "hotline" with Soviet Prime Minister Dmitry Kisov, one of the most memorable sequences in the film, with another great improvisation by Peter Sellers.

However, the information given to the Soviets to neutralize the bombers and the decryption key secret Ripper fails to stop one of the bombers, called "The Leper Colony" that has lost all communication. Commanded by Major TJ "King" Kong (Slim Pickens), "a true Texan in fiction and in real life," the B-52 achieved the target and finally drops the bomb, mounted by the full nuclear orgasm largest eigenvalue Kong. On the dreaded

"device doomsday," the sinister Dr.Strangelove (third paper of a histrionic Peter Sellers), a disturbing character confined to a wheelchair with an anarchic right hand, recommends that the President Muffley to think about restocking human in a mine 1,000 feet deep for more than 100 years through a rough process of human regeneration with Nazi references.

After miraculously rise victorious and Dr. Strangelove shouting "Mein Führer!, I can walk!" , start the bombing apocalyptic doomsday on the last sequence of the film, synchronized sequence Music to the tune "We'll Meet Again" performed by Vera Lynn.

special mention the brilliant performances of the entire cast, clearly highlighting the work of Peter Sellers, with 3 very different roles, including accents, in the best performance of his career with an Oscar nomination . Sellers, who initially started playing 4 roles, including Kong's largest, suffered an accident in the cockpit and had to be replaced by the Texas Slim Pickens, a real Texan who hardly had to play his part. George C. Scout flawlessly firm's first foray into comedy the role of General Turdigson immature, although subsequently criticized acitud of Kubrick, which according to him, forced him to overreact to eventually undermine its performance in a role burlesque. For its part, Sterling Hayden Kubrick accepted the call after several years out of the interpretation, and then embroider his role as General Ripper paranoid.

It is noteworthy that the original ending, with a wild sequence known as "war cakes" where everyone in the "War Room" went crazy with the Apocalypse, was removed, probably after final cut after the assassination of Kennedy.

Kubrick, who produced the film entirely in the UK, fleeing "Hays Code" and most likely film censorship had to re-edit a dialogue which referred to the city of Dallas after the assassination Kennedy, right at the end of the premiere, which had to be canceled, delayed it until January 29, 1964. Phone

Rojo.Volamos Moscow is now considered one of the best political satires in the history of cinema, and reminds us that any historical situation, however critical it is, beyond the power of satire and comedy.

How To Make Rabbit Water

The hour of Jaime Rosales.

(Special Programme in collaboration with the Information Club Alicante, in the First Conference of the English Society of Criminological Research profiles held on 20 and 21 January 2011)

"What no human eye is capable of trapping, which no pen, brush or pen is able to fix your camera catches him without knowing what it is and fix it with scrupulous indifference of a machine. "
Robert Bresson,
" Notes on filmmaker, "1975.

C dogmatic on this aphorism expressed the great French filmmaker Robert Bresson, in his famous "Notes on the Cinematographer" , one of the most interesting qualities in the filmmaking process and moving image on screen, which he called simply the cinema. In Bresson pure vision of the cinema, parking the drama in favor of literal interpretation and emphasized the austerity of staging with large flat and static. On one level antagonist filmed theater, actors are simple models, devoid of emotions physical tools in the service of literary script and, therefore, to the free interpretation of the viewer emotionally.

is very clear, after watching a day Hours (2003) by Jaime Rosales, winner at Cannes FIPRESCI prize awarded by the international criticism, the more remarkable influence of the French filmmaker in his understanding of cinema. Rosales enthusiastically follows the tenets on the cinema of Bresson, especially in his debut with a film so special in the English scene.

A little film style today, and according to which, in point of inflection that is the inexorable growth of high definition technology on screen, may be primarily the scrupulous indifference film machine, as expressed in his notes Bresson; looked away, almost voyeuristic filmmaker to pure narrative, literal, without artifice, indeed, absent from natural distractions to the static view, challenging the viewer's imagination and suggestion.
High definition movies of Rosales, inherited Bresson, is outside the field, in the profiles of major and minor characters, such as self-image and staging. And this definition is the highest you can get, because there are no limits of interpretation, and is at the mercy of the willingness of the viewer.

In hours a day, witnessing the daily disappointment Abel (Alex Brendemühl) a man stuck, emotionally static, a prisoner of routine and boredom. Jaime Rosales said the idea came after reading the "Times" article on the evolution of different theories on the psychological profile of the murderers in series, which claimed the absence of a theory or main argument, with many questions thrown for many years, without response. For this reason, Rosales finally meets with his particular way of understanding cinema, an ideal scenario for the production of a film. Always, indifferent style, whose virtue is not responding to or question, but look and show, from a perspective outside the narrative, but closer in curiosity.

The range of criminological profiles shown in the history of cinema, ranging from profiles developed within the socio-cultural environments lower, past the most obvious pathological diagnosis, even some more subtle features profiles, socially affluent, attractive and social success. Some samples are M, the Vampire of Düsseldorf (M, Mörder Unter Uns, 1931) of Fritz Lang, Monsieur Verdoux (1947) of Charles Chaplin, The Night of the Hunter (The Night of the Hunter, 1955) Charles Laughton, Psycho (Psycho, 1960) Alfred Hitchcock , Peeping Tom (Peeping Tom, 1960) of Michael Powell, In Cold Blood (In Cold Blood, 1967) Richard Brooks, Henry: Portrait of a murderer (Henry, portrait of a serial killer, 1986) John McNaughton, The Silence of the Lambs (The Silence of the Lambs, 1991) Jonathan Demme, born Murderers (Natural Born Killers, 1994) of Oliver Stone, Se7en (1995) David Fincher, or American Psycho ( 2000) Mary Harron, among many others. In

hours a day, the profile of Abel and the way in which Rosales presents it, is very ambiguous features, early diagnosis is difficult, yet very believable. Abel is a young man with no motives, no projection of future rooted in their social relationships and emotional labor, which assumes as part of the boring routine and over time, but he despises deeply. Any expression of happiness, either in their family or friendly, seems to go against the principles of deep disgust in society. However, its victims are people whose profiles are evident over time, as if the more contempt for Abel was the passage of time and his greatest fear, existential reflection of himself in his victims.

The reflection of himself, one of the most remarkable film about serial murderers, with profiles self-absorbed, vain and egocentric. The first image we have of Abel in the film is reflected in the mirror shaving, as a symbol of the daily routine and looking statically a while the mirror. This presentation is a statement of principles on the basis of the profile of Abel, but not clearly dissociated access easy answers.

Why kill Abel?, Evasion to answer this question, is the centerpiece of the whole movie. Rosales, with its particular look away from the intimate surroundings of the character, explaining that they needed more than physical elements such as the actor himself, Alex Brendemühl of glances, to translate its intentions about the movie.

bressoniano The peculiar style of Rosales, austere musical devices or camera movement, interpretations dry and staging almost documentary, at any time seems to go into depth approaches to psychological or sociological issues, something to be welcomed, given the excess of fireworks on the subject in his film version. Besides Bresson, Rosales is evident in other influences such as Jean-Luc Godard in the systematic narrative and dialogue, or the recently acclaimed Michael Haneke, the latter perhaps indirectly, to converge in the film influences both both in the topics such as staging.

Jaime Rosales portrayed in "The Hours of the Day" daily routine boredom and Abel with a particular legacy of European cinema style copyright as Godard or Antonioni, and especially Bresson. General plans and fixed where players leave the field of view of a hidden camera located almost voyeuristic. A style of filmmaking as risky as necessary in the English scene.

So The hour it stands today, as well as at the date of its release in 2003 as a "fresh" on the subject, open to all sorts of debates. Atypical in the national scene, earning viewing, and provides a different view of the stereotypical movie mass murderers.

is possible that our routine, boredom and boredom in modern life lead us to destruction many times. The fear is that the routine and boredom of others, we mate.

How To Make A Sail For Sunfish

Be or Not To Be by Ernst Lubitsch.

Credits and synopsis. Home playbill.

"If you could write the 'Lubitsch Touch," still exist, but took the secret with him to the grave. It's like the Chinese art of glass blowing, no longer exists. Occasionally, I look for an elegant twist and say, 'How Lubitsch would have done? " And I can think of something, and looks like Lubitsch, but it is Lubitsch. No longer exists "
Billy Wilder

" Conversations with Billy Wilder, Cameron Crowe
, Alianza editorial.

L ubitsch longer exists. This was reaffirmed by the end of his days, in talks with Cameron Crowe known in the nineties, who perhaps sought more admiration for so many years in his movies, his disciple, collaborator and friend, the great Billy Wilder. It reaffirmed, as I say, as much earlier, in itself Lubitsch's funeral in 1947, is well known another conversation with William Wyler, in which the latter declared: "No more Lubitsch ..." , to which Wilder replied "Worse still, no more movies Lubitsch ... "
If a comedy genius like Billy Wilder sentence twice the extinction of the genius of Lubitsch, a little more able to respond. We can only collate, examine their work and make certain that there has been no such, nor does it appear that you can get someone like that. Not that Lubitsch was the funniest or most ironic, as even the most sophisticated. Simply was the first, the teacher, the most complete.

Ernst Lubitsch (January 28, 1892 - November 30, 1947) was born in Berlin in the heart of a Russian-Jewish family, where he started in theater as an actor in Max Reinhardt's hand, working with actors such as Emil Jannings. About 1913 is claimed as an actor and scriptwriter in the recent German film industry of the Union Films Alliance (UFA), embodying successful comic characters, archetypal Jews of Berlin society, until 1916 when he decided to abandon her acting career in favor of writing and direction of their own films. Lubitsch made in just over 4 years, masterpieces as The Oyster Princess (Die Austernprinzessin, 1919), Madame Du Barry (1919), The Doll (Die Puppe, 1919), Sumurun (1920), Anne Boleyn (Ann Boleyn, 1920), and The Wildcat (Die Bergkatze, 1921) , among others. After being invited to the United States by Mary Pickford in 1922, Lubitsch, one of the first directors Germans who emigrated to the United States, is underway, with 30 years and a good contract in their pockets, at the hands of Warner, a never abandon country, nationalized as an American soon after, and will work in one of the most important film legacies of American industry. Already

States Working together in several films of his time remarkable move, as The Marriage Circle (The Marriage Circle, 1924), The frivolity of a Lady (Forbidden Paradise, 1924), The Madness of Charleston (So This Is Paris, 1926), or The Student Prince (The Student Prince In Old Heidelberg, 1927) , where he specializes in the sophisticated comedy, increasingly sophisticated towards the end of his stage moves. His famous screenplays full of sentimental entanglements and flirtations love, become a more persuasive, paradoxically, with the end of silent films and the arrival of talkies. However, his early films are entirely sound, almost musical. With this, and after falling The curtain of the dumb, Lubitsch must again reinvent their talents to the new musical theater curtain, while his genius toward dialogue and narrative rhythm, with remarkable results in works as interesting as Eternal Love (Eternal Love) and The Love Parade (The Love Parade), both held in 1929. However, the most important legacy of the films of Lubitsch before the Second World War, would work hand in hand as If I Had a Million (If I Had A Million, 1932), A Woman for two (Design for living , 1932), The Merry Widow (The Merry Widow, 1934), The Eighth Wife Bluebeard (Bluebeard's Eighth Wife, 1938), or the magnificent Ninotchka (1939) , featuring an extraordinary Gerta Garbo comedy newcomer. Ninotchka seems prescient of political satire reflected in the subsequent Be or Not To Be (To Be or Not to Be, 1942) . During this period the name of Lubitsch would be greatly admired for his swift narrative, a sense of ellipsis, subtle irony and suggestive eroticism with which outlined his films. While among professional colleagues, was given a distinctive name to the set of qualities that seasoned their scripts and staging, the famous "Lubitsch touch."

Joseph Tura (Jack Benny) plays Hamlet in one of the iconic sequences "To be or not to be" outraged by the subsequent abandonment of a spectator in the second row, after hearing famous first verse of the same name to the title of the film. One of the many samples of the enigmatic "Lubitsch touch."

But What is the "Lubitsch touch"? . The eternal question with no firm response from many fans and historians of the great Berlin. Again, Billy Wilder, his most brilliant disciple, and whose release is said to be hung for years a sign with the phrase "How would Lubitsch?" , said the purpose of "Lubitsch touch" :
"It was smart use of the superbroma. One was a joke, and that was enough, but then there was another even bigger joke over it. "

Lubitsch, who admired the films of other filmmakers of his generation as Charles Chaplin and Swedish Mauritz Stiller, on his arrival to American industry, would account for these and many others, his talent for suggestion, refining their own . This, coupled with his work in Berlin with his personal staging, transit through the musical and brilliant dashes of intrigue, finally led to the famous "Lubitsch touch" , indestructible weapon against censorship, in which only need to show a 2 on one side and another 2 other hand, for the sum is evident in the viewer, without showing any number more, much less a 4 . However, to get an idea in the Lubitsch film, a 2 +2 , always followed by a 4 +4 , as Wilder called the superbroma, a succession of gags in crescendo, which feed each other suggestively. Whereupon, the pace and sequence of gags is endless. All of this an elegant staging and a latent eroticism, studied for years by many, and nobody seems to be able to match.

International Posters.

This would have its greatest exponent in the top creative talent Lubitsch in Be or Not to Be, the 1942 film presented today at the series devoted to "The Satire on War ", and that includes other titles such as The Great Dictator (The Great Dictator, 1940) Charles Chaplin , Phone Red. We flew to Moscow (Dr.Strangelove, 1964) Stanley Kubrick and MASH (1970) Robert Altman .

And it is very important to note the year of production Be or Not to Be, 1941, and his debut, 1942, since, without doubt, the movie "real time", more satirical Nazism and the invasion of Poland. To be or not to be is a very unusual film in what had been customary in the films of Lubitsch, slightly preceded in context of political sarcasm Ninotchka, in 1939. Atypical film for its obvious character Nazi propaganda, and its dramatic scenes, although rare, unusual in the American stage director of Berlin. However, even with the hand extended by the producer Alexander Korda, censorship was more than possible, especially, and ironically, in the field of love flirting in a War on American society, whose moral principles are founded on his image family and marriage. Lubitsch manages to flip through unobjectionable all these moral values \u200b\u200bof American stagnant, always heightened in states of war. And it does with its magnificent "touch" and a subtle use of narrative ellipses.

Marriage Tura, brilliantly played by Jack Benny and Carole Lombard, gave off a great chemistry interpretation, which unfortunately was not replicated after the disappearance of Carole Lombard in January 1942, shortly before the premiere of "To be or not to be."

In Be or Not to Be, the theater company "Polski in Warsaw led by " big, big " Joseph Tura (Jack Benny) and his wife, Maria Tura (Carole Lombard), also famous actress of the Polish capital, perform the play "Gestapo", a parody of Nazism and its secret service. In the Jewish theater group, are Bronski actors (Tom Dugan), with a striking resemblance to the Führer, and Greenberg (Felix Bressart), who dreams interpret monologue Shylock in The Merchant of Venice " of Shakespeare, and finally manages to play against Hitler himself, at least, in the end, it really is your partner Bronski "in the outcome of the film. In the theater company, the long-suffering stage manager constantly trying to get off the fumes of vain actors in a series of gags in the style of Lubitsch comedy. However, the joke is more acidic and hilarious, after finding that the alleged actors of overacting so much in the skin of the real members of the Gestapo. Following the censorship of the work, the company is relegated to represent only the parallel work in progress, "Hamlet" of Shakespeare , where the long monologue that plays the role of Hamlet, Joseph Tura, is used by his wife to flirting with a young airman in the Polish Army Sobinski (Robert Stack). From this presentation, and after the invasion of Warsaw by the Nazis, Lubitsch delight in the hilarious situations to conflict with their own Gestapo, the three involved in the sentimental plot, playing with the priorities of the actors, who put its relations with the war in most of times, thereby achieving, Lubitsch, one more than the subtle purposes of the film, expressing his disdain for the invaders and the threat of Nazism. The role of comedians in the resistance becomes necessary after discovering the plans of the traitor Professor Siletzsky (Stanley Ridges) within the Nazi party. From there, latent brightest moments of the film, the thin line shown persuasively by Lubitsch in the exchange of identities between players and members of the Gestapo, in a mythical unstoppable rhythm sequences, among which are included interpretations Joseph Tura parodying the teacher herself or irritating Siletzky Colonel Ehrhardt (Sig Ruman), with its constant diversion responsibility to his subordinate Captain Schultz (Henry Victor)-another point of witty satire disguised as a comedy about the reality of the Nazi hierarchy, until the arrival of the Fuehrer to Warsaw to take advantage of the actors to mingle with the Nazis and eventually escape to England .

The sequences in Be or Not To Be , is an authentic piece of jewelry. Based on the classic division of the film in three acts, there are a prologue before the Nazi invasion of Warsaw, the explosion of the war (at the top of the sense of gag Lubitsch, with a multitude of interactions between characters in a spiral direction) and outcome in the flight to England actors. Right from the prologue we witness the presentation of the protagonists in a succession of some of the best gags of the film, as a true statement of principles comic bathed in the "Lubitsch touch."

From the opening sequence, with the presentation of Hitler in Warsaw before the Nazi invasion, to the presentation of the actors as actors theater group, concluded a first set of presentations which alludes to the fictional as the shadow of real, and that would complete later characters like the Colonel Ehrhardt, to "reinterpret" their own role, played by exactly the same as Joseph Tura above. Lubitsch plays constantly during the first half with the relationship between the personality of the actors and their interpretations, whose fusion of vanities and cravings lead in the most hilarious film. Lubitsch touch with his armed only get to deduct a logical behavior of the Nazi hierarchy, and get it cleared items as if it were a mathematical equation. Thus, the two sides of the film, the group of actors and the Nazi invaders, conflicted by the parody of the vanities of both, and the destabilization of course a moral order and hierarchy of others toward the viewer . However, in Be prepared script or not to be , continually omitted dramatic departure from the historical moment, something that irritated then a certain sector of the Jewish population. But Lubitsch did not need such weapons, and the tragedy is so deductible as its elaborate gags.

special mention to the fabulous cast of be or not to be headed by married couples who plays Tura, Jack Benny and Carole Lombard, assisted by a class side like Robert Stack and Sig Ruman. The gorgeous couple that gives life to the vain marriage of actors, Tura, is one of the highlights of the film with her vital representation of the daily routine in a marriage Celebrity actors, with their strengths and weaknesses, flirting and jealousy.

Jack Benny is the actor Joseph Tura. Above we see him playing Hamlet, and supplanting the Colonel Ehrhardt and Professor Siletzsky.

is especially delicious interpretation of the fabulous Carole Lombard, since its first staging a sophisticated evening dress until the last plane of the film.
Unfortunately, Carole Lombard, "married in real life with Clark Gable, with a brilliant career ahead of him," would suffer a tragic plane crash, which would perish with their parents and the rest of crew, months before the premiere of the film, January 16, 1942, at the age of 33.

After the unexpected accident that claimed the lives of the extraordinary actress, Lubitsch was forced to correct a line of original installation, excluding a scene of flirtation between Maria Tura and Lieutenant Sobinski, an unwelcome line in which Lombard expressed ironically against the young airman: "What can happen on an airplane?"

After nearly 70 years after its premiere, Be or Not To Be preserves intact its ability to suggestion and continues to be one of the most studied references in the comic History of Cinema. The "Lubitsch touch" retains all the freshness of his sense of humor sophisticated narrative ellipses elegant and subtle performances. A weapon that continues to be invincible to the ongoing attempt to pervert the cinematic backdrop, unable to fight against the obvious. Lubitsch, far ahead of time, which "touch" is yet to decipher, behind the mask of sophisticated comedies.

among us, and with all due respect to Mr. Wilder, Lubitsch there ... better yet, his films there.
